Ford Police Interceptor Utility FAQ

Here are some frequently asked questions if you happen upon this website:

Is this an official site?
No, this is a “fan” or customer site for people who have purchased utilities at auctions, dealerships, or private parties.

Are you a cop?
No, just a person who purchased a retired Ford Police Interceptor Utility through an auction. When the police are done with them, they sell them to the public. It’s perfectly legal if you use them correctly.

Why get an expired cop car like the police utility?

  1. The price is the main reason, they’re $10-15k cheaper than the civilian
  2. You get police features not available on civilian cars
    1. police brakes
    2. takes a hit at 75mph from behind
    3. Bulletproof Door Panels
    4. Police Interceptor Utility vs. Ford Explorer

What can’t you do with these?

  • Can’t have flashing lights that are illegal for your state. Typical those are red/blue lights that have to be disconnected or removed. Please look up your local state laws. Example: California
  • Can’t use sirens
  • Can’t impersonate a cop in any way
  • Can’t pull people over, especially using sirens or flashing lights
  • Can’t wear a cop-like uniform while driving
  • Can’t have police markings such as “POLICE.” etc.
  • Can’t drive like you’re a cop (ignoring rules)

Strongly Recommended

These can be used to say you’re impersonating an officer:

  • Stay away from 2-way radios, cop radio scanners, radar guns, and typical cop things
  • No Handcuffs

Any major concerns?

Bad Engine Design: Waterpumps

Leak into the engine if not replaced if they happen to go bad. Should be replaced prior to 100k miles with a 100k miles additional limit before next replacement. $1900 (California estimate) repair with timing changed at same time.

Bad Cats

Mine seem to be bad after under 100k miles. If you have the 3.7L ford will replace them up to 8 years and 120k miles but for the EcoBoost, they don’t care at all. Screwed.

Exhaust Leaks

In Auburn, Mass. — where last week at least three officers were hospitalized due to high carbon monoxide levels in their vehicles and the department pulled several SUVs from service — Ford said it’s worked to seal open holes in the vehicles and the department has placed them back on the road.
